Officially the history of dada begins on the fifth of February 1916 when the German writer, artist and cabaret performer Hugo Ball and his wife Emmy Hennings opened the Cabaret Voltaire in the restaurant Die Meierei at the Spiegelgasse in Zurich.
Unofficially dada started earlier. In 1912 and 1913 the French artists Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia, the American photographer and artist Man Ray and the American photographer and galery owner Alfred Stieglitz organized activities that may well be labelled as dadaist. They publish magazines, organize expositions and soirees and mingle in a very conspicuous manner in the cultural life of New York.
